f/2.8 - MPN: 2147
Strengths: Great lens. Fast Lens. Silent Auto focus. Sharp corner to corner. Good focal range. nikon 5 year warranty.
Weakness: A little heavy. A little pricey.
Overall I love this lens. Great Nikon quality.
Just be careful on Nikon's extended 4 year warranty.
I ordered lens and had it shipped to a family member in
another state. I did not pick up lens until 2 weeks
after lens was delivered. Extended Nikon 4 year warranty calls for warranty card to be mailed not more than
10 days after purchase date. What kind of B* is this ?

Agreed... 5yr warranty is a slogan used for marketing only.
Strengths: Build Quality, Wide Angel, Sharpness, Picture Quality
Weakness: Price
I bought this lens and did not regret at all. This lens provides a super wide angle, which makes it perfect for indoor wedding shooting, people photography, landscape photography and structure photography. Sometimes, wider is better. :) The picture quality is fantastic. The build quality is one of the best too. No doubt this is Nikon's one of the best short to middle range lens. It is expensive but it is well worth it. I use this lens extensively and it stays on my D200 most of the time.

TopStrengths: Low-light focusing ability, all-metal construction, solid feel
Weakness: Price, near object focus
This lens is Nikon's flagship mid-range zoom for digital SLRs. It's super FAST and amazingly quick to focus- unless the object is close (less than 1ft). The image quality is amazing and is crisp from edge to edge. The sweet spot of the lens is in the f/4 to f/8 range.
Fully open, it gives AMAZING results- you need daylight though.
I've paired this with my D200 and I couldn't be happier.
The only other drawback is the price. You can get more versatile lenses for cheaper, but then you'll sacrifice image quality.

TopStrengths: Sharp picture, useful zoom range for landscape/portret photography, optics quality
Weakness: Zoom ring too close to SLR body, big & heavy, price is steep
This lens has replaced my 18-70 DX lens (which is smaller and lighter) from my starter kit. This beast is quite big and heavy: have to search for a bigger photo bag. However, quality of image, focusing and build quality is excellent. My only complain is unusual location of zoom ring: it is next to SLR body which is different from my other lenses and harder to grip. I find it not very convenient.

TopStrengths: FAST, WELL BUILT, SHARP
Weakness: ZOOM RING IS A LITTLE BIT TO CLOSE TO BODY
THIS ARE MY FIRST PRO LENSES FROM NIKON AND I HAVE TO SAY THEY ARE GREAT. SHARP FROM F/2.8, HSM IS SILENT AND REALLY FAST. THEY DON'T WEIGHT TOO MUCH, ALL METAL, ZOOM AND FOCUS RING ARE HIGH QUALITY. I RECOMMEND THEM.

TopStrengths: Good Out-of-focus Blur(Bokeh); Very solid and robust build quality; Fast and quiet focus performance; Very sharp for all focal range
Weakness: Flare control is not perfect as a top-of-the-line Nikkor; Purplae fringe appears at wide end sometimes; Pricey and heavy.
I bought this lense 6 months ago. I do love this lens. It may cost a lot, but the amount of features, such as the high build, SWM and suoer fast f/2.8 aperture definitely puts it in a professional category. The high optical performance is amazing. There is no significant difference of sharpness between the tele-end and wide end. And no visible light fall-off with medium to tele focal length at any aperture setting. The purple fringe doesn't bother me very much. Overall it is a great purchase and I highly recommend it to all the nikkor lovers.

TopStrengths: Fast & Silent Auto Focus, High image qulity, Solid Feel, 5 years warranty,
Weakness: Price, a little bit heavy
This is my first DX len. Got it last week and brought it out for some shots. The image quality is amazing and the blur is awesome. I was also very impressed by its FAST auto focus. I love it so much and it will stay on my FinePix S3 Pro for most of my works.

TopStrengths: sturdy, weathersealed build, constant 2.8, popular focal range
Weakness: weight and size (tradeoff for the strengths), price, flare and distortion in certain situations
this is a great lens for any nikon dslr (except for the d3). it is especially good for low-light work and social shots where space can be tight, given its focal range. it's decently sharp wide open at 2.8, but peaks around f4-5.6. at f8-11, it loses its edge over the lesser priced consumer models, but the reason why you pay the premium for a lens like this is to use the wider aperture. the benefit of the larger aperture applies also to other areas beyond the image quality- it allows the af sensor to receive more light leading to less hunting and the viewfinder image is much brighter than its variable aperture cousins. i noticed this difference between the 17-55 and the 18-70 i have, which makes it hard to switch back unless i need to save on the weight.
the only big thing i would take it down a 1/2 star for is price-value. canon also makes a 17-55 with image stabalization for ~$200 less, but it isn't an L (so not a metal, weathersealed build). this lens would do quite nicely with vr (especially with the 18-55 kit getting it), especially if it maintained the build - i would even pay an even slightly higher premium to get this lens with the same iq. the other minor issues i have is there are times i wish the lens reached a little longer (55 is a bit short for a headshot, but the bokeh is there thanks to the aperture), there is some nasty lens flare (the big, intimidating hood helps most of the time though), and there is a decent amount of barrel distortion at 17mm (but can be fixed in post).
overall, a very finely built lens and has practically lived on my primary camera since the day i bought it.

TopStrengths: Solid, beautiful construction. Fast, silent Auto focus, works well in low light.
Weakness: A tad heavy, make sure you have a good tripod if your not hand holding. Price could always be lower :)
I have had allot of field time with this lens. I use it as my walkaround lens in the city and also monthly trips to the everglades to photograph landscape. The glass is of the highest quality and performs well in low light situations, the 2.8 comes in quite handy. It focuses and locks quite quickly when not shooting manual. Overall a great investment that holds its value and can be used with both past (and for the time being) future Nikon bodies.

Nikon 17-55 F2.8
Strengths: Good build quality & result
Weakness: Price
Nikon's best mid-range zoom for digital SLRs. Fast focusing. Image quality is amazing. Good for travel and wedding (low light).
The only other drawback is the price but you will get what you paying for (to every cent)Guarantied.
